New Plymouth District Council is reviewing the Dangerous and Insanitary Buildings Policy and proposing a new Draft Dangerous, Affected and Insanitary Buildings Policy. The policy will clarify how NPDC will manage dangerous, affected and insanitary buildings in the district in order to reduce the danger they pose to the public.

The Draft Policy includes updates to reflect legislative changes, operational practice and alignment with current good-practice guidance. Key changes include incorporating requirements for affected-buildings, applying a clear Identification–Assessment–Action process for managing dangerous, affected or insanitary buildings, and using a risk-based approach to prioritising building issues.

More information about what is proposed and why is outlined in the Statement of Proposal, alongside the full Draft Dangerous, Affected and Insanitary Buildings Policy.

Submissions close on Wednesday 10 June 2026.
