In December 2024 we started a trial community patrol programme with City Safe Wardens in New Plymouth's CBD, in response to growing concerns and advocacy from the business community.

The role of the wardens was to be a friendly, visible presence in the CBD, building relationships with all users of the city centre, including businesses and visitors. They were also tasked with helping to deescalate problems that may arise and letting us know if anything needed to be addressed. Like security guards, the wardens have limited powers to enforce the law or move people on.

The trial comes to an end in May, and we want your feedback ahead of a decision on whether community patrols should continue.
