We have met with the Tarata Community three times this year to discuss proposed works along the Tarata Road between Tarata and Purangi Saddle.
As part of these meetings there were questions and concerns raised about the parameters around the use of the Junction Road (Tarata Road) Endowment Fund for improvements on Tarata Road (previously known as Junction Road). Find out more about the endowment fund click here.
Our Long-Term Plan 2024-2034 proposed six kilometres of Tarata Road receive a reduced level of service (reversion to gravel); a decision on this has been postponed until we look at our Annual Plan 2025-2026 next year.
As a result of input from residents, we have heard what residents have told us and will be recommending this proposal is dropped, as we consider what the value of Tarata Road is to the district.
From recent research with stakeholders, we estimate that there is $42M a year regional GDP being transported along Tarata Road, so it makes economic sense to maintain the road at an appropriate level.
The Endowment Fund is additional to funding we receive from NZTA Waka Kotahi and rates revenue for roading.
This survey is an opportunity for the communities along Tarata Road to have input into the future of the Endowment Fund and includes questions about voting eligibility on future decisions on the geographical area, where the money is spent and on what projects.
Your feedback will help inform recommendations for elected members to consider in early February 2025.
Feedback closed Friday 22 November.
